Halfway Up The Stairs

Tonight I brushed on two coats of polyurethane on the remaining treads.  We laid the completed treads in place, just to get a visual of the end product.  The photos just don't do it justice.  We love how they look.  We are anxious to get the stairs back in place.  So close to completion.  Here are a few pics from tonight.

Garage Door Opener and Stair Risers and Treads

We set out for the weekend to be full of house renovation progress and we didn't let ourselves down.  Greg spent a majority of his time in the garage.  He installed two new electrical outlets as well as installed a new garage door opener.  No longer do we have to hit the button 5 times in order to get it to open or close.  The new opener also has a nifty feature that when you walk past the sensor, the overhead light turns on.  The little things excite us.

While Greg worked in the garage, I worked on the stairs.  Half of the stair treads are now stained in Special Walnut and have two coats of polyurethane.  Waiting for those to dry 12 more hours so we can nail them down.  The other half of the treads are now getting stained.  We are still able to get up the stairs, but it's a little tricky.  I also puttied, sanded, primed and put two coats of Alabaster paint on all of the trim and risers.  Stairs are getting closer to completion!  Still some small trim to clean up but happy with our progress this weekend.

Stimulating the Economy and Saving the Environment...

While I spent Saturday shopping in Indy with Melissa (stimulating the economy), Greg bought lumber (stimulating the economy) and spent the day building a faux wall in the garage.  Goal is to insulate this wall so that the north side of our house stays warmer (saving the environment by using less heat).  The bathroom on the other side of that wall is quite chilly in the winter.

Greg removed this radiator from the garage wall.  It is so heavy - not sure how he did that on his own.

Sunday Greg finally had good weather to finish installing the master bathroom exhaust fan.  A clear day and the attic wasn't sweltering hot.  While Greg worked on the exhaust fan, I began scraping paint from the steps.  Seems the risers were once a yellowed white and then a minty white.  I tried to capture the color in the photo below, but difficult to see the old colors.

Columbus Day Discovery

Greg spent his Columbus Day holiday stripping the stair treads, finding viable wood that we can refinish - hence a discovery.  Seems appropriate for Columbus Day.

Greg is so excited that Tuesday night we visited Sherwin Williams to select the new finish color.  Dark Walnut is the winner.  Not sure when the finishing will begin but if Greg has anything to do with it, it will be sooner than later.  I'm sure the stairs will look beatiful when complete.  I'm thankful Greg spent his holiday working on our stairs.  I'm a lucky gal.

More Carpet Removal

Greg removed the old carpet from hall bath and found small hexagon tiles underneath.
Looking much better after cleaning off the glue that was used to install the carpet.
Carpet removed from the upstairs hallway.  Yeah! All of the upstairs carpet has been removed.
Now, to tackle the removal of the carpet on the stairs
We can see where the stairs were stained on the sides, while a carpet runner went down the center.
The risers had been painted white.  Lots of staples for us to remove.
All staples now removed so we can safely use the stairs.
Why is Greg so happy????
I found hardwood floor in the foyer and hope it is in the dining and living room too.  We have a lot of sanding and refinishing in the future, but look at all of the money we will save because we don't have to install new hardwood floors.  A good day indeed.  Well, until the Colts lost.
